Canterbury-Bankstown Bulky Waste Clean-Up: 2 Free Bookings, 3m³ Limit and Mattress Rules
Quick answer
If you live in a house, townhouse or building with five or fewer units, City of Canterbury Bankstown gives you two free clean-ups per calendar year, each up to three cubic metres (a pile 3m wide × 1m high × 1m deep). You can combine both into one double clean-up of six cubic metres. Book online via the Booked Clean Up portal or call 9707 9000. Council says there is usually a wait of 2–6 weeks, depending on the time of year, and its page says to book before 11 December to avoid missing this year's collections. Not sure you're in Canterbury-Bankstown? Which council am I in?
Who can book
- Residents of Canterbury-Bankstown, for large household items that don't fit in the bins (no business or construction waste).
- Houses, townhouses and buildings with five or fewer units: book online yourself or by phone.
- Buildings with six or more units: individual units cannot book. The building manager, strata manager or an authorised strata committee member books for the whole building. Speak to your strata, building manager or real estate agent.
Checklist: how to put it out
- Limit: 3 cubic metres per clean-up (6 with a double booking). Extra items may be rejected, or a clean-up may be deducted from your annual allocation.
- Put items out the day before, preferably the evening, so others don't add to your pile.
- Place them at the front kerb (or the spot you chose in the booking) — not covering the footpath or road. Council can't collect from private property.
- Attach your booking number to the pile (council emails a poster; paper is fine).
- Small items go in sealed boxes or bags — loose small items won't be picked up.
- Branches: tied in bundles, under 1m long and 15cm wide. Carpet/underlay cut into 1m squares; rugs under 3m and rolled.
- Bed frames dismantled. Remove doors from fridges, washers and dryers.
- Mattresses (all sizes, plus ensemble bases; not electric mattresses): add to your booking, write the mattress booking number on it, and stack it in a separate pile with nothing on top — a different truck collects it, possibly later the same day (see mattress guide).
- Fridges and other whitegoods are accepted (see fridges & whitegoods).
- Need to change or cancel? Do it at least three business days before collection. Late cancellations and forgotten pile-outs still use up a clean-up.
What is not collected
- Glass and mirrors (windows, glass-topped tables, shower screens, aquariums)
- Gas bottles, fire extinguishers, nangs, any batteries or items with batteries inside
- Chemicals, liquids and paint (including empty paint tins), oils
- Food waste; small items and beanbags that fit in the red bin
- Heavy/extra-large items two people can't move safely (stumps, logs, pianos, treadmills, bricks, concrete)
- Car parts and tyres; sharp items (nails, palm fronds, cactus, syringes)
- Business, construction and demolition waste
Where the rest goes
Council points to Recycle Mate for drop-off options. Many excluded items can go free to a community recycling centre or an EPA Chemical CleanOut: see our CRC / e-waste & paint guide and Household Chemical CleanOut dates 2026.
