Inner West — council clean-up guide

Inner West residents can book a bulky waste collection for large household items that do not fit in the bins. There are four separate categories — book each category on its own because different trucks collect each stream.

Official clean-up page Make a booking

Before you book, try reuse, donation or sale. Inner West notes that bulky household items and furniture bookings go straight to landfill; other categories are recycled where possible.

The four categories

1. Bulky household items & furniture

Collects: broken furniture and damaged household items; bed frames; used/damaged rugs; broken small appliances.

Does not: metal/whitegoods, branches or mattresses (book those separately); car parts; paint/oils/gas/batteries/fluros/smoke alarms (use a CRC); building materials including asbestos; household garbage; items two people cannot lift.

2. Branches

Collects: tree branches bundled and tied; real Christmas trees bundled and tied (max 1 m length, 10 cm diameter).

Does not: stumps, dirt, bagged leaves, rocks, rubble, hoses, general garbage, timber offcuts.

3. Metal and whitegoods

Collects: BBQs, stoves, microwaves, fridges/freezers, washers/dryers, hot water systems, guttering and single-sheet galvanised iron (max 1.8 m), metal bed frames, electric/gas heaters.

Does not: car parts; problem waste (CRC); building materials/asbestos; recyclables; rubble; polystyrene; oil heaters (Chemical CleanOut / e-waste events).

4. Mattresses

Collects: mattresses, ensemble bases, futons (sent for recycling via Soft Landing / Mattress Recycler).

Does not: sofa beds, metal or timber bed frames, pillows, air mattresses.

Limits, fees and presentation

Items put out too early may be treated as illegal dumping. Wrong category = left behind; re-book the correct stream.
Asbestos & problem waste. Building materials including asbestos are not collected. Paint, oils, gas cylinders, batteries, fluorescent lamps and smoke alarms belong at a Community Recycling Centre (Inner West CRCs open weekends), not on the kerb.
