How to get rid of a fridge or whitegoods in Greater Sydney
Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, ovens and similar whitegoods are usually handled through your council bulky / clean-up booking — not through a Community Recycling Centre (CRC). Rules differ by LGA: some collect whitegoods with the general pile; others use a separate metal/whitegoods stream or a delayed second truck. This page does not invent fees — open your council’s official booking page for any charges.
- Inner West — remove doors and locks from refrigerators (clean-up conditions).
- City of Parramatta — remove fridge/freezer doors and locks; degassing items may be collected separately.
- Northern Beaches — whitegoods (doors removed) listed among accepted bulky goods, in a separate metals/whitegoods pile.
- Willoughby — whitegoods and metal accepted; remove fridge doors.
- Blacktown — remove doors / tape doors shut (or lay with doors facing the ground); whitegoods are collected separately and can take up to 5 business days after the booked collection date.
Option 1 — Book a council clean-up / bulky collection
Best default for a dead or unwanted appliance when you can wait for a booking slot.
| Council (on this site) | How whitegoods are usually handled | Official link |
|---|---|---|
| City of Sydney | Booked free bulky pick-up; separate into furniture, metals/whitegoods, and electronics groups. | Book pick-up |
| Inner West | Book the Metal and whitegoods category (separate from furniture / mattresses / branches). Remove fridge doors/locks. | Council clean-up |
| City of Parramatta | Whitegoods accepted under booked clean-up with doors/locks removed; degassing items may be collected separately. | Clean-up services |
| Northern Beaches | Whitegoods (doors removed) and other metals — present as a separate pile within bulky-goods booking rules. | Can / can’t collect |
| Willoughby | Whitegoods and metal on household-goods clean-up; remove fridge doors. Mattresses are a separate Soft Landing booking — not the same stream. | Kerbside bulky |
| Blacktown (timing notes) | Whitegoods accepted on household clean-up; collected separately up to 5 business days after the collection date. Remove/tape doors. Bookings for eligible residents (council page: up to 12/year, no extra fee stated on that hub — confirm on booking). | Household clean-up |
Option 2 — Separate whitegoods / metal stream (same booking, different presentation)
Some councils (e.g. Inner West metal/whitegoods category; City of Sydney metals group; Northern Beaches separate metals pile; Blacktown delayed whitegoods truck) collect appliances on a different pass from sofas and mattresses. Follow the booking confirmation: wrong stream often means the item is left behind and you must re-book.
Option 3 — Community Recycling Centre (CRC) — for hazards, not the fridge itself
NSW EPA Community Recycling Centres take common household problem wastes (paint, oils, batteries, gas bottles, smoke detectors, extinguishers, fluoro globes/tubes, and sometimes e-waste) in household quantities. They are not a general fridge drop-off.
Use a CRC when clearing a kitchen or laundry so that paint, oils, batteries and similar hazards leave the property safely instead of ending up on a clean-up pile.

Option 4 — Paid removal / tip / retailer take-back
Consider a paid pathway when:
- You need the appliance gone before the next available council booking (e.g. end of lease).
- The item is oversized, unsafe to present, or refused on the “cannot collect” list.
- A retailer offers take-back when delivering a replacement (ask them — we do not list commercial prices here).
No affiliate links and no invented fees on this draft. Search your council’s “alternative disposal” notes (Blacktown’s clean-up hub lists licensed resource-recovery centres as options for waste outside the clean-up rules) or a licensed skip/collection service, and confirm prices directly with them.
Quick decision checklist
- Confirm which council you are in, then open that council’s bulky / clean-up page.
- Book before anything goes on the nature strip.
- Remove or secure fridge/freezer doors.
- Separate metals/whitegoods from mattresses/furniture if your council requires it.
- Divert paint, batteries, gas bottles and chemicals to CRC / CleanOut — never the kerb pile.
- If the booking wait is too long, compare paid removal yourself; we do not quote prices here.
