How to Get Rid of Old Tyres in Sydney

Quick answer

Most Sydney council clean-ups won't take tyres (Randwick, for example, excludes car parts). The easy legal routes are:

  1. Leave them with the retailer when you buy new tyres — choose a TSA Accredited tyre retailer.
  2. Drop them at an accredited collector or recycler.

Never leave tyres on the kerb, in bushland or in a bin.

1. Hand them back at a TSA Accredited retailer

Tyre Stewardship Australia's My Tyres My Choice program says retailers showing the "Tyre Stewardship Australia Accredited" sign on their shopfront door or window are committed to responsible management of used tyres, and accredited retailers send old tyres to TSA Accredited recyclers/collectors. Look for the sign, or ask before you buy. Disposal fees vary by retailer — ask at the counter.

2. Drop off at an accredited collector or recycler

TSA's directory lets you search accredited collectors and recyclers by service type and state — filter to NSW.

Example: Tyrecycle says individuals can drop off tyres at its Sydney locations, and it accepts car, truck, bus and agricultural tyres (contact them about specialty tyres). Check their page for the site address, hours and any fees before driving out — Tyrecycle Sydney.

Why dumping is a bad idea

Report suspected tyre dumping to the EPA Environment Line on 131 555.

Council depots

We haven't confirmed which Sydney council depots take domestic tyres. Check your council's site (find your council) before you go.
