City of Sydney — bulky clean-up guide

City of Sydney residents can book a free pick-up for bulky household items (furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, electronics and similar). Book online; put items out only the night before your scheduled collection.

Official: book a free pick-up Booking form

How booking works

When and where to put items out

Putting items out too early can lead to neighbours adding to the pile, or the pile being treated as illegal dumping and rejected — with a possible fine. Check your confirmation email for the date.

Separate into three groups

The City partners with specialised recyclers. Separate items into groups and keep groups slightly apart:

  1. Furniture and bulky household items
  2. Metals / whitegoods
  3. Electronics

Keep loose items contained or tied. Cut large rugs into about 1 m lengths, roll and tie them.

Volume limits

What is typically accepted

Examples the City lists for household furniture and bulky items include tables, chairs, sofas, wardrobes, cabinets, wooden bedheads/bedframes, mixed wood-and-metal barbecues, mats and rugs, toys, prams, suitcases, pots and pans. Mattresses, whitegoods and electronics are also collected under the booked service (recycle partners handle them separately).

Not accepted (examples): items with glass tops/panels; and — as with most kerbside services — building/renovation waste, asbestos, paints, chemicals and other hazardous materials. Search the City site for how to dispose of unaccepted items.

Asbestos. Do not put asbestos on a clean-up pile. Use a licensed removalist and a licensed disposal facility. See the City’s asbestos guidance.
