Where to get rid of an old mattress in Sydney
Mattress rules differ by council. Some include mattresses in the general bulky booking; others require a separate mattress category or a dedicated Soft Landing booking. Never dump a mattress on the street without a valid booking.
Always open your council’s official page before you put a mattress out — categories and recyclers change.
By council (verified for this draft)
| Council | How mattresses are handled | Official link |
|---|---|---|
| City of Sydney | Included in the free booked bulky pick-up. City notes mattresses go to a recycler recovering a large share of components (steel, foam, timber, textiles). | Book pick-up |
| Inner West | Separate Mattresses clean-up category. Accepts mattresses, ensemble bases, futons. Does not accept sofa beds, metal/timber bed frames, pillows or air mattresses. Sent to Soft Landing / Mattress Recycler. | Clean-up categories |
| City of Parramatta | Mattresses and bed frames listed among accepted clean-up items (max 2 m length) within the booked/scheduled clean-up rules. | Clean-up services |
| Northern Beaches | Mattresses and bed bases are on the accepted bulky goods list (within booking and size rules). | Can / can’t collect |
| Willoughby | Mattresses are not on the general bulky clean-up. Use the free booked mattress collection with Soft Landing (max 4 eligible items; fabric-covered ensemble bases without drawers; label both sides; place by 6 am on collection day / evening before). | Booked mattress collections |
If your council is not listed yet
Use Which council am I in?, then search that council’s site for “mattress”, “bulky”, or “clean-up”. Soft Landing partners with multiple NSW councils — check whether your council offers a dedicated mattress booking.
Do not leave mattresses on the kerb without a booking. Illegal dumping fines apply across Greater Sydney.
