Moving out in Sydney — clean-up checklist

Moving week is when illegal dumping spikes. Book early, sort streams, and never leave a surprise pile on the nature strip.

2–4 weeks before moving day

  1. Confirm your council (and the council of the place you are leaving).
  2. Open that council’s bulky / clean-up page and check how many bookings you have left this year.
  3. Book now — lead times of 1–4+ weeks are common (Willoughby recommends ~1 month for preferred dates; Parramatta notes waits up to ~4 weeks).
  4. For Inner West, plan separate bookings if you have furniture, metal, mattresses and branches.
  5. List reusable items for sale/donation; keep landfill clean-ups as a last resort.

1 week before

  1. Sort: donate / sell / CRC drop-off / clean-up / red bin.
  2. Take paint, oils, gas bottles, batteries, fluros and (where accepted) e-waste to a Community Recycling Centre.
  3. Print or write booking labels / reference numbers.
  4. Measure your pile against the council volume limit (often 2–3 m³).

Night before collection

Asbestos / fibro / renovation waste. Not for kerbside clean-ups. Use licensed removal and disposal. Hazardous liquids and gas bottles: CRC or Chemical CleanOut — never the nature strip.
If you miss the booking or put items out early, remove them promptly. Leaving them can be treated as illegal dumping (see Parramatta illegal dumping notes for how seriously councils take this).
